Phase 1 Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Payload Operations Facility, Cape Canaveral, Brevard County, Florida

Author(s): Steven Koski; Heather Mauldin

Year: 2006

Summary

Between March 13 and March 30, 2005, New South Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey within the proposed Payload Processing Operations Facility (PPOF). The survey area consists of approximately 40 acres including the facility area (21 acres), a parking area outside the security fence (0.85 acres), and entry drives measuring a total of 2,000 feet in length.

Phase I survey found limited evidence of 8BR558 remains in the southeast corner of the proiect area. Additionally, four small shell and artifact scatter sites and one archeological occurrence were identified. Two sites contained a thin coquina midden with one to six sherds, and two contained sparse coquina shell and bone only. In addition to the prehistoric material, several concrete pods were identified in the northeast corner of the proiect area. These concrete pods may be associated with installations related to the missile range control complex formerly located outside of the proiect area to the southeast. It is also possible that the concrete pads are related to facilities associated with an access road off Samuel Phillips parkway to be utilized for access to the proposed PPO facility. Due to the small size, and lack or paucity of cultural artifacts, the prehistoric sites are not considered eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The concrete slabs within the proposed project area ore also considered ineligible for NRHP inclusion.
