Summary
The Chichimecan Revolt of the 1340s tore asunder the weakened body politic of the Paquime province and in so doing radically changed the settlement pattern in the old kingdom. In the Robles Phase, the city, along with some satellite villages in the Casas Grandes Valley, was abandoned and the political power, as well as the economic wealth, shifted to such northerly towns as were located in the Zuni, Hopi, Mogollon, and the eastern Anasazi-Chichimecan homelands. Some of the Paquime artisans may have been attracted to these areas, while others are thought to have retreated to some of the lesser Casas Grandes satellite villages which, after the revolt, carried on in the more isolated Sierra Madre Occidental. A number of these agriculturally based villages continued to produce certain types of ceramics which were made in the Medio Period tradition. The people could not, however, carry on their extensive trading activities due to their reduced circumstances. Evidence of this segment of the continuum is still to be found in the community cliff-houses located along the Chico (Yaque) River which drains into the southwestern corner of the defunct province where a dendro-construction date permitted the suggestion that builders were still at work on their town a generation after the disaster of Paquime and within the calendrical span of the Robles Phase.
