Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Remote Archaeology: Taking Archaeology Online in the Wake of COVID-19" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Given the global pandemic, this spring the Florida Public Archaeology Network was faced with a dilemma: how to do public archaeology without the public? Staff with the Northeast and East Central Regions created a video series, Tea & Trowels, as a way to connect the public with archaeology from the comfort of home. The series features one of two hosts conversing with an archaeologist via Zoom about their research and what archaeology means to them. Each guest is asked the same five simple questions. The videos aim to present archaeology in an informal and personal setting, highlight ongoing research in Florida and beyond, and illustrate the realities and aspirations of the field. This paper discusses the series’ creation as well as examines some of its affordances and constraints as a public archaeology program.
