Summary

An archaeological survey of Hamilton and Marion Counties, Indiana, was conducted under a Department of the Interior Historic Preservation Fund Survey and Planning Grant administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. The reconnaissance covered 637.5 acres within selected environmental zones in both Counties, incuding 492.5 acres in Hamiton County and 145 acres in Marion.

Prior to the survey approximately 478 archaeological sites had been recorded for Hamilton County and 392 sites for Marion County. A total of 199 previously unrecorded prehistoric archaeological sites were located during the reconnaissance. A survey of 492.5 acres in Hamilton County revealed 141 sites for an average density of 1 site per 3.5 acres, and 6.4 artifacts per site. Of the 145 acres surveyed in Marion County, 58 sites were located for an overall density of 1 site per 2.5 acres, with 2.9 artifacts per site.

A total of 96 new sites were recommended for archaeological testing. Additionally, floodplains, alluvial fans, and other areas with the potential for buried deposits within the two Counties have been recommended for further investigation. Several previously recorded archaeological sites of potential significance were examined, and have also been recommended for further investigation.
