The Archaeology of Vernal Pools: An Example from Placer County

Summary

Paper presented at both the Society for California Archaeology and the Vernal Pool Society in 1981 on the archaeological investigations within Placer County on vernal pools conducted as part of an environmental impact assessment by Archaeological Resource Service. The two separate parcels totaling 1550 acres, located between the towns of Roseville and Lincoln in Southern Placer County, California.

A total of 25 cultural resources were identified within the two parcels. Isolated finds of prehistoric tools constituted two out of eight areas in the southern parcel, while 2 isolated finds made in the northern parcel. Artifacts include metates, hammerstones, pestles of the "wooden mortar type," manos, and chipped stone cutting tools. Historic resources were found more predominantly in the northern parcel than in the southern parcel.
