Summary

The following report summarizes the results of a Cultural Resources Survey of two parcels of land, totaling about 220 acres, for a proposed obstacle course - The Peacekeeper Challenge Course - on Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

Cultural remains observed in and near the project area consist of a previously recorded site and a newly discovered site. LA 88087, recorded in 1988, consists of a low density scatter of historic trash probably dating to the 1930s. This site lies immediately adjacent to Area 1. LA 89854 consists of a small scatter of historic trash and an historic road and is located in Area 2. Additionally, 11 isolated occurrences were recorded. These consist of historic artifacts and a recent rock pile.

The field data potential of LA 88087 and 89854 is considered to have been exhausted by field documentation. Any additional information may be limited to archival research. The sites are recommended as not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (36 CFR 60.4) under Criterion 'D' but an associated road in Area 2 warrants further attention. The data potential of the isolated occurrences is considered to have been exhausted by field recording.

The report concludes by recommending archaeological clearance for Area 1, and avoiding Area 2 until further evaluation is possible.
