Summary
Chambers Group, Inc. has completed a cultural resource survey on Kirtland Air Force Base for ancillary facilities associated with the Starfire Optical Research Facility. This survey encompassed a 59.7 acre survey for the access road, a 31.7 acre survey for a utility corridor, and a 87.4 acre survey for the new M60 Firing Range location.
Three archaeological sites and 12 isolated occurrences were discovered within the three survey parcels. The sites consist of two historic mining loci containing evidence of gold/silver mine prospects. These sites probably date to the late nineteen and/or early twentieth centuries. One prehistoric archaeological site was recorded. This lithic scatter probably represents a remnant of a hunting/gathering camp probably dating to the Anasazi period. The presence of ash/charcoal staining may indicate subsurface cultural remains. Further work is necessary in order to determine the significance of this cultural manifestation.
Clearance is recommended for the two historic and all of the isolated occurrences. A limited testing program has been recommended for LA 71944 in order to determine if significant subsurface deposits exist.
