Cultural Resource Surveys of 6.84 Acres for Sandia National Laboratories, Environmental Restoration, Sitewide Drill Locations Number 1 and 2, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico

Summary

Cultural resource surveys for approximately 6.84 acres of property situated within Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), Bernalillo County, New Mexico, yielded no significant cultural resources. The area surveyed includes two drill locales with substantial buffer zones and one access road (Location No. 2).

The results of this survey concur with a previous Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) cultural resources inventory conducted by the Center for Anthropological Studies (CAS) in 1981 (Franklin and Rodgers, 1981). No archaeological sites were located within the proposed drill site locations nor the access route during this previous archaeological project. All CAS observed isolated occurrences (IO) were collected.

A semi-recent building foundation with associated materials (Location No. 1) and historic cans (Location No. 2) were located during the current cultural resource surveys. Also observed in Drill Location No. 2 was one prehistoric utilized lithic (I) No. l ). The historic building materials are thought to lack significant integrity and antiquity, thus are not considered eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. IO No. 1 as well as the historic cans are no longer thought to be potentially significant, as all important information has been recovered through field recordation. For this reason these artifacts are no longer thought to be eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. Clearance is recommended.
