Class III Cultural Resources Survey and Building Evaluation For Proposed 1999 Demolition, Construction, and Renovation Projects Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Summary

A non-contiguous, linear archaeological inventory survey was conducted by Ogden Environmental and Energy Services (OEES) within the western portion of Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) and on City of Albuquerque lands immediately south of the base boundary. Within Kirtland Air Force Base, 33.3 acres (13.5 ha) and on City of Albuquerque lands 21.8 acres (8.8 ha) were inventoried. In addition to the archaeological inventories seven structures within the base were evaluated for historical significance.

Within the base boundaries one isolated occurrence (IO) was found during the inventory survey. With the exception of a low sandy rise, located on the portion of the survey leading to the AICUZ 702-704 building area, the majority of the proposed Kirtland Air Force Base project area has been impacted by previous construction activities. It is recommended that the above-mentioned section be monitored during construction. It is also recommended that other than the monitoring, no further archaeological studies be completed, within the base boundaries, related to this specific project.

On lands owned by the City of Albuquerque two archaeological sites and four IOs were discovered. One site, LA 127814 (OEES 233-2), lies within the proposed right-of-way, and is considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is recommended that if the proposed project can not be rerouted to avoid the above site that a data recovery plan should be developed and the portion of the site within the proposed right-of-way will be excavated to mitigate the project impact.
