Summary
This report summarizes results and findings of the TRC Mariah volunteer pithouse excavations at LA 53672 (AR-03-03-05-358) conducted in 1996. LA 53672 is an ancestral Puebloan habitation site that dates from the Late Developmental to Coalition period and is one of at least 100 prehistoric sites containing a ceramic component recorded in the valley bottoms and foothills of the Manzanita Mountains. The site is located at 1,828 m (6,000 ft) elevation within the lands withdrawn from the Cibola National Forest to Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) along an alluvial fan on the south side of Coyote Creek, a large tributary of Tijeras Arroyo. Water erosion had impacted the cultural deposits and exposed the remains of a pithouse feature in the cutbank of a tributary drainage of Arroyo del Coyote. The site was initially documented in 1985 and the masonry features at the site were tested during a geophysical study in 1996. The pithouse feature was exposed in profile along the cutbank and determined to be located in a deep depression that was also marked as a magnetic anomaly during geophysical testing. The pithouse, which was later excavated by volunteers from TRC Mariah and the Albuquerque Archaeological Society, is the focus of this report.
