Cultural Resources Investigations for a Proposed Small Arms Range, Northern Laramie County, Wyoming Volume 1

Part of the F.E. Warren AFB Project Metadata project

Author(s): Tetra Tech, Inc.

Year: 1990

Summary

This report represents the results of Phase I and Phase II cultural resources investigations conducted by Tetra Tech, Inc. in the northern Laramie County, Wyoming, from May to October 1989. The work consisted of sample surveys for two different project areas (Phase I) and additional intensive survey, archaeological site testing, and Native American consultation for one selected project area (Phase II).

Ninety-two sites and 87 isolated finds were recorded in 3,172 acres in two project areas in northern Laramie County. The 92 sites consisted of prehistoric field camps or residential base camps, limited activity locations, lithic procurement sites, bone scatters, rock cairns, and historic sites. The prehistoric sites represent small seasonal camps and activity areas that are a portion of the High Plains seasonal round, which is not well-defined. The prehistoric sites identified in one project area in particular have excellent physical integrity, and many of these sites could contribute pertinent information on a variety of regional research issues.

Thirty-one prehistoric sites are considered potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Most of the 31 sites are small prehistoric field camps; some contain stone circles. Several limited activity sites including a lithic procurement location and two buried sites are also considered potentially eligible.

Additional testing of some potentially NRHP-eligible sites is recommended before any determination of eligibility is made. Also, it is recommended that a Native American traditionalist be notified and present during any activities involving subsurface disturbance at the Spring Creek project area.
