Summary
In August 1996 the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Vernal Office requested that Sagebrush Consultants, L.L.C. (Sagebrush) recover a historic ammunition cache in Daggett County, Utah. The cache was located on BLM lands near the John Jarvie Historic Property in Brown's Park. This request was particularly urgent because of concerns that the exposed site could be vandalized should its location become public knowledge. Potential for the public to learn of the cache location was stated as a primary concern and immediate recovery of the cache was considered imperative due to the site's attraction to looters. The Jarvie Ranch Ammunition Cache was designated Site 42Da803.
Site 42Da803 was first reported by Brian and Susan Bellew, John Jarvie Ranch Historic Site Managers. Physical recovery of the materials located at the site was conducted by Sagebrush personnel Michael R. Polk, Donald D. Southworth, Heather M. Weymouth and Sheri Murray Ellis, and by Brian and Susan Bellow of the BLM on August 10 and 11, 1996.
Recovery of all materials contained within the ammunition cache at site 42Da803 yielded a total of 2303 loaded metallic cartridges, spent casings and primed brass. Also recovered were several different types of ammunition components, reloading tools and accessories, a wooden box, a bucket, paper ammunition boxes and packaging, newsprint, faunal materials, floral material, assorted nails and screws, cork, glass and a bead.
