Cultural Resources Survey for the SRP High-Tech Interconnect Project, Chandler, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Andrew D. Lack

Year: 2022

Summary

SRP is working with the City of Chandler and Intel on the High-Tech Interconnect Project (HIP), a proposed transmission project that is required to provide reliable power to the expansion of Intel’s Chandler campus.  SRP is working with the City of Chandler to meet the city’s preference to underground a significant portion of the transmission line, address conflicts with existing underground utilities, and ensure technical feasibility of the underground segments. The remaining overhead segments are located within areas that already have overhead transmission facilities or are commercial in nature. The underground portion of the route that was approved between SRP and the City of Chandler designates the city to pay for the incremental cost for undergrounding. The Intel expansion will require SRP to build a new 230kV substation on Intel’s campus and new 230kV transmission lines connecting the campus to two existing substations.

As a part of SRP’s Certificate of Environmental Compatibility, a Class I records search and a Class III cultural resources survey of the project area were conducted. The Class I records search was conducted by PanGIS, Inc. (PanGIS) and is reported elsewhere (Mengers 2021). Following the Class I records search, SRP tasked EcoPlan to conduct an intensive pedestrian (Class III) cultural resources survey (reported herein). The purpose of the survey was to identify cultural resources within the project area, assess their eligibility for listing according to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria for significance, 36 Code of Federal Regulations 60.4, and make a recommendation concerning the potential effect of the proposed undertaking on cultural resources listed in or eligible for listing in the NRHP.
