Summary

On behalf of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the General Services Administration contracted Gulf South Research Corporation to complete a cultural resources management plan for the NRHP-listed Hanover Furnace archaeological historic property, Pemberton Township, Burlington County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA (54 U.S.C. 306101a) and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.

The study summarizes relevant historic contexts and previous research and evaluation surveys for the Hanover Furnace historic property (28BU512 and 28BU514) and its associated archaeological sites: 28BU513, 28BU944 and 28BU945. The study assessed current conditions for the Hanover Furnace historic property and provides management recommendations for conservation of Hanover Furnace and its associated archaeological sites: nomination as an archaeological district; avoidance of ground disturbance; routine condition assessments; enhanced law enforcement patrols to discourage looting and vandalism, development of a public education program; and further historical and archaeological research on the Hanover Furnace Ironworks and its labor force.
