Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Ongoing Care and Study Through a Digital Catalogue of Port Royal", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
An essential element of archaeology is the restoring of art or cultural heritage to the country of origin or former owners. Repatriation has had a difficult history in archaeology. Even today, not all cases are simple. One incentive of the cataloging project was preparation for the Port Royal collection to be returned to Jamaica. Texas A&M University first undertook the storage and conservation of the excavated artifacts due to Jamaica’s limited resources to maintain them. While repatriation is not yet secured, the decision was made to prepare a digital catalog that will allow vital information to easily transfer wherever the collection should go. This paper discusses the importance of repatriation and the unique journey of the Port Royal collection. Following the previous discussions about the recent digitization project, this paper will also provide a final overview and look into the future for both the collection and continued collaborative research.
