Summary
Reliant Energy, Inc. plans to install water supply and discharge facilities to serve the Desert Basin Power Plant now under construction in Casa Grande, Arizona. A buried water supply pipeline, approximately 9 miles long, would be used to convey Central Arizona Project water to the power plant from the East Main Canal of the Maricopa-Stanfield Irrigation District. A buried water discharge pipeline, about 3.5 miles long, would be used to transport wastewater from the cooling towers at the power plant to evaporation ponds. Approximately 2.7 miles of the discharge pipeline would be buried within the same trench as the water supply line before it would di verge to the proposed site of the evaporation ponds. The area potentially affected by the installation of the buried pipelines is no more than 100 feet wide, and is situated within a highly disturbed corridor between existing roads and railroads. Construction of the evaporation ponds would disturb approximately 140 acres within a parcel of undeveloped lands immediately south of a large expanse of mine tailings.
