Class III Cultural Resources Survey and Evaluation of 600 Acres, Peterson Space Force Base, El Paso County, Colorado

Summary

From 29 March to 7 April 2022, Stell Environmental Enterprises, Inc. (Stell) was contracted to perform a Class III Cultural Resources Inventory of 600 acres (ac) managed by Peterson Space Force Base (SFB) under subcontract agreement 1F-60541 with Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) (the Project). As a result of this survey, Stell identified and recorded three new historical archaeological sites, one historical isolated find (IF), and one precontact or Protohistoric IF. Additionally, 6 of the 11 previously recorded archaeological resources within the current survey area were relocated and reevaluated, and only one of the five previously recorded IFs was relocated. One of these IFs, a Washita side-notched projectile point, was collected during the previous survey (Anderson 1994). The two remaining sites, both historic railway segments (5EP.868.9 and 5EP.868.10), proved not to be within the current survey boundaries or installation boundaries; however, two additional segments were identified on the Peterson SFB property (5EP.868.23 and 5EP.868.24). Additionally, historical site 5EP.2180 was previously reported on an adjacent parcel of land managed by the Colorado Springs Airport (COSA). During the 2022 investigation, Stell archaeologists found that 5EP.2180 extends onto Peterson SFB lands; as such, this site was included in the reevaluation efforts. Forms for resources not relocated were completed to provide an updated record. See Appendix A for 1:24,000 Inventory Maps Depicting Recorded Sites and Isolated Finds. See Appendix B for all Colorado Office of Archaeology Historic Preservation (OAHP) archaeological resource forms. None of the newly recorded sites or reevaluated sites meet the criteria for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and are therefore recommended as Not Eligible. Additionally, the two linear segments encountered were found to be lacking integrity and characteristics that would allow them to be considered contributing properties to the overall 5EP.868 resource.
