Summary
This is an abstract from the "*SE New Orleans and Its Environs: Historical Archaeology and Environmental Precarity" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
TRC, on behalf of the Louisiana Office of Facility Planning and Control, recently completed the Section 106 consultation associated with the multiyear investigations of the new Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans. This new hospital project, which was a FEMA-funded recovery project resulting from damage to the old Charity Hospital during Hurricane Katrina, led to the archeological examination of 14 city squares in the Lower Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. While TRC did not complete the excavations, we were responsible for limited data analysis and report writing. This paper will summarize those efforts and examine nineteenth and early twentieth century lifeways in this once vibrant neighborhood.
