Summary
This is an abstract from the "The Archaeology of Eagle Nest Canyon, Texas: Papers in Honor of Jack and Wilmuth Skiles" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
This paper presents the historical and contemporary context of radiocarbon dating in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands (LPC) archeological region of southwest Texas. It entwines discussions of early radiocarbon dating history, evolving dating technology and standards, regional infrastructure development, changing archeological research interests, and land stewardship to understand the potential and limitations of the LPC radiocarbon record. This context, and its relevance, emerged while assembling a regional radiocarbon database, completed in 2019, which was subsequently vetted and used to address broad regional research questions.
