Recent Geochemical Analysis of Ceramics from the Upper Basin Region of the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument

Summary

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.

This poster presents the results of recent geochemical analysis of ceramics and other clay artifacts in the Upper Basin Region of the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument. We will compare the geochemical composition of Tusayan Grayware and San Francisco Mountain Grayware sherds, acquired by portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF), to the composition of daub collected from a nearby excavated masonry ruin. We also compare our recently collected pXRF data with benchtop XRF data collected on the same sherds over a decade ago. Finally, we explore the use of both scanning electron microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and scanning micro-XRF to evaluate the effectiveness of these methods for future nondestructive geochemical analysis of ceramics.
