Summary
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
The Pageant Tavern and Hotel operated during the 1920s and 1930s on the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation in Northern Wisconsin. The Pageant Tavern was owned by non-Native and non-local businessmen, but the hotel staff and caretakers were Indigenous (Ojibwe) residents of Red Cliff. A recorded interview indicates the staff lived at or near the hotel, but little else has been documented about their experience. Targeted archaeological survey near the hotel in 2023 identified middens related to domestic activity in the area which were likely created or used by the Ojibwe staff. The paper describes the results of this survey, which offers new insights into the lived experiences of Ojibwe workers during the decline of the logging era and the emergence of tourism industry in Northern Wisconsin.
