Rediscovering Cemeteries at Fort Eustis, Virginia

Summary

This is a poster submission presented at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

People have lived and died on Mulberry Island, now the site of Fort Eustis, Virginia, for at least 10,000 years. However, fewer than expected burial sites are known. Fort Eustis Cultural Resources has been employing cadaver dogs and other methods to search for cemeteries. Thus far we have determined that one plot of land formerly belonging to the Mulberry Island Cemetery Club was in fact used for burials, and we have located two areas that oral tradition holds were the burial places of enslaved individuals. Work is ongoing to round out the story of this corner of Virginia.
