Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Exploration-Forward Archaeology Through Community-Driven Research", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In the fall of 2023, a NOAA-funded mission by the Ocean Exploration Trust and other partners conducted a series of telepresence-assisted remotely operated vehicle assessments of three sites from the pivotal WWII naval battle of Midway. The carriers USS Yorktown, HIJMS Akagi, and HIJMS Kaga, all previously located, were dived and assessed from the E/V Nautilus and remotely from exploration command centers on the mainland. The mission parameters and results as initially processed are presented here.
