Evaluation of 24 World War II Ranges at Tyndall Air Force Base, Bay County, Florida

Summary

This report presents the results of a National Register of Historic Places evaluation conducted on behalf of the United States Department of the Air Force of 24 historic World War II-era flexible gunnery training ranges at Tyndall Air Force Base, located south of Panama City in Bay County, Florida. Argonne National Laboratory examined the remains of the ranges using existing field survey reports, an existing historical context report, field visits, and geospatial light detection and ranging data and documented the findings. This assessment considers whether the ranges retain any information about the World War II gunnery training school at Tyndall Air Force Base, as well as the integrity of the ranges. As a result of this study, Argonne National Laboratory recommends the 24 World War II gunnery training ranges not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the World War II gunnery school and training mission at Tyndall Air Force Base are an important part of United States military history, the physical remnants of the ranges themselves do not retain adequate information to convey the story of the historic gunnery school. The ranges were sufficiently documented in the previous and current studies.
