Summary
This is an abstract from the "Ancient Forest Management and Landscape Transformation: Anthropological Perspectives from the Americas" session, at the 90th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
Recent archaeological excavations in several rock shelters in the Serranía La Lindosa demonstrate that the Colombian Amazon was occupied at the end of the Ice Age at a time of climatic transition. The archaeological record indicates a sustained occupation since the arrival of the first human groups in this transitional zone between Amazonia and Orinoco. Archaeological data are presented and aspects of chronology, site formation processes, settlement pattern and mobility, geographical origin and management of tropical forest resources in the study area are discussed. A discussion will also be made integrating the data into the early archaeology of northern South America and the Amazon Basin.
