An Archaeological Survey of the Cave Buttes Dam Alternative Site and Reservoir, Arizona
Summary
An Archaeological survey in the Cave Creek drainage was undertaken as the result of a contract agreement to assess the archaeological resource base of the proposed Cave Buttes Dam Alternative Site and Reservoir. The research strategy was operationalized by implementing a rigorous sampling program designed to extract a representative sample of existing prehistoric remains. The research area coincided generally with an open creosote terrace and the 50 percent positive recovery of archaeological remains within an environmental zone heretofore considered unproductive economically for prehistoric exploitation justified the application of a sampling research design. Archaeologically, the area was represented best by collecting, gathering, and agricultural activities reflected by architectural features and lithic and ceramic artifacts suggesting a primary chronological placement between A.D. 700-1100. The possibility of a much earlier non-ceramic period is suggested but remains unconfirmed.
An appendix not only evaluates the sites designated for this area in terms of their potential for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places but also proposes an archaeological research program to mitigate realistically the adverse effects of the proposed dam construction.
