Summary

Within the past few years, the description and interpretation of archeological sites in the United States threatened or destroyed by programs of water impoundment, or natural agencies, has accelerated rapidly-virtually all of it as an outgrowth of the work of the Inter-Agency Archaeological Salvage Program. The resulting manuscripts and published reports have grown so voluminous since the inception of the program in 1945 that a checklist and guide to the accumulated scientific literature is deemed propitious.

In general, an attempt was made to include citations of all manuscripts and published reports known by the compilers to have been written by or under the auspices of cooperators and agencies of the Inter-Agency Program. As such, this bibliography is primarily a guide to appraisals and reports of archeological and paleontological remains lost or threatened as a result of the numerous projects for irrigation, flood control, hydroelectric power, and navigation improvement in the river basins of the United States. However, the contents of this volume are not restricted to reports of river basin archeology. Another important category of salvage archeology in connection with federal construction is that carried out in highway rights-of-way. Citations of archeological reports of sites threatened by the laying of oil and natural gas pipelines were included when brought to the attention of the compilers the research for which has often been underwritten by the private enterprise engaged in the construction. Some reservoir salvage has also been accomplished on this basis. Known reports involving archeology pursued in anticipation of expanding industry and urbanization, and of sites threatened by the testing of nuclear devices, and sites on or near recreational areas of national park lands, were also included.
