Analysis of Existing and Proposed Impacts to Sites 38SU182/208 and 38SU106, Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter County, South Carolina
Summary
Including a monitoring report, overall report and concurrent letter, these documents present the organization, implementation and concluding results of the analysis of existing and proposed impacts to National Register eligible site 38SU182/208 at Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter County, South Carolina. Due to continued use of Passageway and Sugar Sand roads that skirt the northern and eastern edge of the site, the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office requested that an analysis be performed to determine if continued use of the roads would adversely impact the site, and is the site was being adversely impacted, to make recommendations for avoiding future impacts. In addition, Shaw Air Force Base was interested in determining if removal of damaged sand pines from the site would adversely affect the deposit found there. A similar situation regarding damaged sand pines occurs at 38SU106, where one locus (Locus C) was determined eligible for the National Register. These reports provide a summary of previous fieldwork at 38SU182/208 and 38SU106, a discussion of the current fieldwork at 38SU182/208, Shaw’s proposed method of tree removal, and our observations and conclusions regarding the previously described impacts.
