Broglio Site, IL (11WM80) Project

Summary

The Broglio Site (11WM80) is located in northwestern Williamson County in southern Illinois. It lies on a low upland ridge between an intermittent stream to the south and Lake Creek to the northeast. The site occurs within the Mt. Vernon Hill Country of the Southern Till Plain Division. Based on the soils, the site area once supported forest.

The Illinois State Archaeological Survey conducted test excavations at the site in 2012 and 2013 to investigate the impacts of the FAU 903/FAU 9588 Herrin to Johnston City Blacktop project. The Illinois Department of Transportation funded the test excavations. Testing identified 22 subsurface features and materials associated with site use during the Middle Woodland (Crab Orchard Tradition). The plowzone included diagnostic artifacts associated with the Mississippian and Archaic Periods. Based on the testing results, the investigators recommended additional excavations at the site. With additional support from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Archaeological Survey conducted full-scale excavations for required data recovery in 2013, under the field direction of Brent Lansdell of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey.

Steven Kuehn identified and analyzed the faunal remains from 27 features associated with Late Archaic and Middle Archaic/Late Archaic (mixed Middle Archaic and Late Archaic materials) components for the testing and excavation projects. Steve describes faunal preservation as fair to good. Recovery techniques for fauna included troweling and hand collection and screening through 1/4" mesh for a sample of the features. Flotation samples yielded faunal remains from 1/16" mesh. Steven Kuehn uploaded the faunal database to tDAR. Bonnie Styles and Mona Colburn entered the metadata, and mapped the data to many of the tDAR ontologies.
