Field School at the Biface III Site (12MI18) 1981-1982
Summary
The Biface III Site (12MI18) was investigated under the leadership of Dr. B.K. Swartz, Jr. This investigation was conducted under permit number DACW-27-3-82-17. A final report draft, authored by Mary Lou James and Carl D. Ebbert, is present in the collection.
From June 9th to July 7th of 1982, the sixteenth Annual Ball State University Archaeological Field School excavated the Biface III Site located near Peru, Indiana in the Mississinewa Reservoir drainage. This field work was carried out by undergraduate students Mary Lou James, Dawn E. Pepper, Carl D. Ebbert, Walter Brumfield, Jo Goldberg, Julia Washburn and Barbara Lumbis. A previous surface collection of the site was performed by William R. Wepler and Donald R. Cochran in 1981 under permit number DACW-27-4-81-96.
A large quantity of Liston Creek flakes were found on the site, indicating the source of chert in the immediate area was being utilized. The large quantity of fire-cracked rock in association with heat treated Liston Creek chert may be of significance. A Kramer-like point fragment was found in two pieces in two different areas of the excavation. The basal-end was found in pit S2-W0, and the medial segment was found in pit N1-E1. This point type occurs in the Late Archaic to Early Woodland period (James and Ebbert N.D.).
The sites investigated as part of this field school are located in Huntington, Miami, and Wabash counties.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact photographs, artifact report, finding aid, oversized material spreadsheet and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include accession file, additional artifact photographs, artifact care/methodology, artifact sketches, document folder listings, excavation unit summary records, field catalogue records, field notes, drafts of field reports, initial data sheet, letters of correspondence, maps, maps of trench orientation and location, oversized material labels, photographic material excel spreadsheet, project objectives, project proposals, records removal sheet, slide labels, stratigraphy records, and a thesis related to the archaeological site. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
