Phase II Archaeological Evaluation of the Brick-Makers Site (18ST688) on the Patuxent River Naval Air Station's Webster Field Annex, St. Inigoes, St. Mary's County, Maryland (2000.005)
Summary
In 1999, a phase II investigation of the previously identified Brick-Makers site (18ST688) was conducted by Environment and Archaeology, LLC. This investigation mitigated site destruction resulting from construction of a new hanger by the Patuxent River Naval Air Station located in St. Mary's County, Maryland. It is located in the Webster Field Annex, St. Inigoes MD, property of the Navy. The purpose of this investigation was to continue research on the historic Brick-Maker's site to determine National Register eligibility. Within this goal, this investigation wanted to determine if this site represented a colonial era kiln associated with an early English occupation. Phase II testing was confined to an acre project area around the previously identified brick concentration located in the southeast portion of Field 9B. This site was previously found to encompass 250 feet. A total of nine units were excavated around this concentrated and the artifact inventory is located in Appendix E of the report. Notably, brick clamps and a large number of glazed bricks were identified. This investigation could not determine the age of the kiln as the site was heavily disturbed from long-term agricultural activity.
