ROI121, Battle of Peckuwe: Site Identification & Documentation and Public Outreach,Clark County Ohio

Summary

This is the tDAR Project page that represents Reports of Investigation 121 from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University.

The following report reflects collaboration amongst multiple archaeologists and student researchers. The project objective for this National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) grant was two-fold:

1) to more clearly and accurately identify key strategic events and features of the Revolutionary War Battle of Peckuwe (1780)

2) identify extant integrity, and assess and plan to mitigate threats to the battlefield through survey and public engagement

The project included a thorough review of historic sources. The primary field methods included metal detector survey using student field technicians and community volunteers. Completed maps and brochures featuring newly discovered information were disseminated to the public via public outreach events. The overall goal of this project was to provide additional archaeological information necessary for the protection and preservation of the important physical site of the Battle of Peckuwe. We characterized landscape features significant to the battle using the ABPP’s KOCOA military terrain analysis.
