ROI117, Archaeological Survey of Chain O' Lakes State Park, Noble County Indiana
Summary
This is the tDAR Project page that represents Reports of Investigation 117 from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University. The Applied Anthropology Laboratories (AAL) at Ball State University conducted a Phase Ia archaeological investigation at the Chain O’ Lakes State Park (COLSP) with support from a Historic Preservation Fund grant. The primary goals of this research were to investigate the location of historic-era Mulberry School and a presumed contact-era American Indian Village north of Bowen Lake.
Research focuses on two survey areas: 1) a 15.07 ac (6.1 ha) area near the park entrance around the extant foundation of the Mulberry School; and 2) an approximately 50.25 ac (20.34 ha) area located in the presumed contact-era American Indian Village north of Bowen Lake. The present survey documented seven new sites and resurveyed two existing sites.
Recovered artifacts included 268 historic metal, glass, ceramic, and other objects dating to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; 16 precontact lithic artifacts; and one artifact of unknown origin. Ten features were documented between both survey areas. Fieldwork did not encounter human remains. Cultural periods represented in the artifact assemblage include Unidentified Prehistoric and late nineteenth and early twentieth century Historic.
