Hunter-Gatherer Archaeology of the Colorado High Country (2001)
Synthesizing research from several important, previously neglected sites, the book anchors its findings in a massive body of data that Mark Stiger gathered over eight years at Tenderfoot - a large lithic-scatter site once categorized as insignificant. Advances in spatial analysis, theoretical approaches, and excavation methods have allowed lithic-scatter sites, once considered less revealing than intact structures and similar sites, to yield startlingly rich cultural evidence. Presenting...
Lithic Analysis Methods (2003)
Lithic analysis protocols used in the Barger Gulch Archaeological Project. This is an appendix from Surovell, Todd A. (2003) The Behavioral Ecology of Folsom Lithic Technology. Unpublished Ph.D. Dissertation, Department of Anthropology, University of Arizona.
MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT SITE 5EP211, COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO (2005)
Three soil samples from two possible hearths and one cobble-filled hearth discovered during recent excavations at prehistoric site 5EP211 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, were floated to recover macrofloral remains. In addition, two fragments of charred wood posts were submitted for identification. Site 5EP211 is a small open camp located along Interstate 25 (I-25) that might be the remnant of a much larger site that has subsequently been destroyed. Radiocarbon dates obtained from charcoal,...
Missouri Basin Chronology Program Statements Nos. 1-5 (1964)
This document includes the first five chronology program statements for the Missouri Basin Project. The Program, as it now stands, was developed during the winter of 1958 by the Personnel of the Missouri Basin Project, Smithsonian Institution; the laboratory of Anthropology, University of Nebraska; and the Nebraska State Historical Society; all of Lincoln, Nebraska; and the National Park Service, Region Two Office, in Omaha, Nebraska. Concern for an over-all program of chronology grew out of an...

POLLEN ANALYSIS AT 5MV1936, COLORADO (2001)
Three sediment samples from a potential agricultural area and between walls of 5MV1936, a possible reservoir, were examined for pollen. Pollen samples from the potential agricultural areas were examined in an effort to recover pollen representing agricultural crops to refine the interpretation of this area. The sample representing sediment between the walls surrounding this possible reservoir, collected with an auger, was examined to recover pollen that might help establish the function of...
POLLEN ANALYSIS OF A SLAB-LINED PIT AT 5ME5962, COLORADO (1989)
A single slab-lined feature was excavated at 5ME5962 and sampled for pollen. Analysis of this sample was undertaken in an attempt to identify subsistence activities associated with the use of this feature.
POLLEN ANALYSIS OF FOUR METATES FROM 5ME3969 (1984)
Four metates from 5ME3969 were selected for pollen analysis. The ground surfaces of the metates were washed to liberate any pollen remaining on them as a result of grinding foods. Pollen analysis was conducted on the metate wash samples in an effort to determine wllat foods may have been processed.
POLLEN ANALYSIS OF GROUNDSTONE FROM THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN SITE (5JF223), COLORADO (1996)
Samples representing groundstone washes and soil controls from the Magic Mountain site, 5JF223, were examined for their pollen content. Levels from which these groundstone were removed yielded radiocarbon ages between 1620 +60 BP and 2890 + 70 BP. Pollen analysis was intended to provide information concerning plants ground using these pieces of groundstone, and therefore insight into subsistence practices of the occupants of the Magic Mountain site.
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM C&A SITE (5DA1687), COLORADO (2002)
Seventeen pollen samples were examined from the C&A site (5DA1687), a Plains Woodland site located near an intermittent drainage in DA County, Colorado. Pollen samples were collected stratigraphically through deposits at the site to identify past vegetation communities and provide information concerning the paleoenvironment. In addition, four pollen samples were examined from sediments beneath large rocks in excavation units in Blocks A and B. A small burial pit containing remains of two...
POLLEN AND STARCH ANALYSIS OF A SINGLE SAMPLE FROM HEARTH FILL, WHITE COYOTE DRAW (5RB2215), COLORADO (2001)
White Coyote Draw (5RB2215) is a circular stone structure containing a hearth. A radiocarbon date of 850 ± tp BP was returned from fill in the cultural level (Gardner and Clarke, 2001). Pollen analysis was undertaken in an effort to provide additional information concerning subsistence and/or local vegetation at the time the site was occupied.
POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM THE RIMROCK HAMLET (5RB2792) AND SKY AERIE (5RB104) SITES, WESTERN COLORADO (1997)
Sky Aerie Promontory (5RB104) and the Rimrock Hamlet Promontory (5RB2792) are Fremont sites located on the Douglas Creek Arch near Rangely in northwestern Colorado. Radiocarbon ages indicate the sites were occupied between the late AD 800s through AD 1005. Pollen, phytolith, starch granule, and macrofloral analyses were undertaken to identify elements of the subsistence base at these sites.
