Arrggghhh Braaaaiiiins: The Zooarchaeology of a Mid-19th Century Privy in New Orleans’ Historic French Quarter (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Helen V. Bouzon. J. Ryan Kennedy.

In this paper we present analysis of faunal remains recovered from a mid-19th century privy at 936 St. Peter Street, an archaeological site in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. Although the faunal assemblage includes domestic trash related to meals eaten by the site occupants, it is dominated by a tremendous number of caprine cranial elements. These cranial bones show a consistent butchery pattern indicating that site occupants were harvesting caprine brains in large numbers, presumably for...

The Art and Light of Paint Rock, Texas (2024)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Kim Cox.

This is an abstract from the "Interdisciplinary Approaches to Rock Art Documentation, Research, and Analysis" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The archaeological site of Paint Rock, Texas (41CC1) at over 300 m in length is the largest continuous rock art site in Texas. Many of its older pictographs have been scheduled to spectacularly interact with the sun on the equinoxes and solstices and apparently also on the cross-quarter days. The older rock...

Art in the Time of Promontory Cave: Enhancement of Rock Art Figures Using DStretch (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Andrew D. Lints. John W. Ives.

While the Promontory caves are well known for their preservation of perishable cultural materials, the red-ochre pictographs inside Promontory Cave 1 have attracted less attention. The conditions within the cave provided a ‘safe haven’ for organic artifacts, but the pictographs themselves have varying degrees of visibility, from quite good to poor. Archaeologists have relied solely upon descriptions made by Julian Steward during his 1930s work. Advancements in digital imagery and rock art...

Articulating the Big Bend of Florida (2023)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jessica Cook Hale. Nathan Hale.

This is an abstract from the "Liquid Landscapes: Recent Developments in Submerged Landscape Archaeology" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Working from the known to the unknown is a core concept in archaeological prospection and is particularly important in submerged landscapes studies. These landscapes are harder to access and have experienced, potentially, more dramatic changes since they were last occupied. We share here the results of a study in...

Artifact and Rock Distributions at Pueblo la Plata (2004)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Lisa Baldwin. Caitlin Wichlacz.

Artifact and rock distributions were noticeably different across the landscape surrounding Pueblo La Plata. By sampling artifact and rock densities along three transects, we attempted to determine what the independent distribution patterns were for artifacts and for rocks. By combining our results, we hoped to see whether or not there was a correlation between artifact and rock densities across the site. We expected to see a drop in artifact densities farther from the pueblo, where less human...

Artifact Assemblage from the Converging Worlds Project (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Andrew Willard. Dorothy Rowland.

This paper discusses the artifacts found during the 2017 summer field excavation of the Highbourne Cay Shipwreck, excluding any hull remains. The wreck is well-known and located in an area that has a low sediment level, as a result, the artifact assemblage is expected to be small. The artifacts found and being discussed will be those that were not recovered by salvagers in the 1960s, and were not in the section excavated in the 1980s. Although, there is a possibility of duplicates of previous...

Statistics will be compiled for each category and for individual artifact types within the groups. The ultimate goal is to...

DOCUMENT Citation Only Sarah Platt.

This is an abstract from the ""Re-excavating" Legacy Collections" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The collections excavated in the 1970s at 87 Church Street in downtown Charleston, South Carolina play a crucial role as part of a repertoire of sites deployed to understand Charleston as a critical urban center and waypoint in the eighteenth-century American southeast. However, a full site report does not exist for these early excavations, and...
