Preservation of American Antiquities - Progress during 1906 (1907)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Edgar L. Hewett.

This is a section of a compilation of short reports, Anthropolocic Miscellanea, included in this issue of American Anthropologist. Hewett's portion of the miscellanea describes recent activities concerning the preservation of American Antiquities. Some of the highlights include a bill that was enacted by the 59th Congress creating the Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado, for the purpose of preserving the remarkable cliff dwelling remains of that region and the Lacy Act.

Preservation of American Antiquities; Progress during the Last Year; Needed Legislation (1906)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Edgar L. Hewett.

Prior to 1904, the only act of our Government looking toward the preservation of our antiquities was the reservation and restoration, by act of Congress of March 2, 1889, of the Casa Grande ruin in Arizona. During the last fifteen months a definite policy of preservation has rapidly developed, so that at present it may be said that approximately three-fourths of all the remains of antiquity that are situated on lands owned or controlled by the United States are under custodianship more or less...

Preservation of Antiquities (1905)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Edgar L. Hewett.

This is a section of a compilation of short reports, Anthropological Miscellanea, included in this issue of American Anthropologist. Hewett's portion of the miscellanea discusses the transfer of land from the administration of the National Forest Reserves to the Bureau of Forestry under the Department of the Interior. This has implications to the prehistoric ruins of the Southwest because legislation must now be targeted towards the Department of the Interior rather than the National Forest...

Preservation of Antiquities SW (1905)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Edgar L. Hewett.

This is a section of a compilation of short reports, Anthropolocic Miscellanea, included in this issue of American Anthropologist. Hewett's portion of the miscellanea describes recent activities concerning Southwestern US sites. More people have visited the prehistoric ruins of the Southwest during the present season than during any five previous years. This points to a marked revival of interest in American archeology, and to the necessity for an unremitting campaign for the preservation of...

Preserving a section of the Inca road in the lower Lurin Valley, Peru. (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Edines Pebe. Camila Capriata.

The Qhapaq Ñan or great Andean Road was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in June 2014. The road located between the Pachacamac Sanctuary and the Inca administrative center of Hatun Xauxa, located in the central highlands of Peru, not only constituted one of the main sections of this network, but was also one of the segments selected for this declaration. Following this process, a series of conservation projects have started taking place along this network in the segments that have been...

Preserving Human Remains in the Context of Excavation and Forensic study of the H. L. Hunley (2020)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Paul Mardikian.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Lives Revealed: Interpreting the Human Remains and Personal Artifacts from the Civil War Submarine H. L. Hunley" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. The waterlogged, anoxic and mostly sealed conditions that prevailed inside the Hunley for 136 years provided an optimal environment for the preservation of the human remains from the eight crewmembers. Of all the materials preserved on the submarine, conjoined...

Preserving Monumental Landscapes Under the Antiquities Act (2001)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Christine Klein.

This Article examines the Antiquities Act, a 1906 statute that delegates authority to the President to establish national monuments on federal lands for the protection of prehistoric structures and relics. This modest statute, originally a scant one page in length, has set off a century of intermittent controversy that its drafters could not have anticipated. Although Congress probably intended that the statute merely protect archaeological ruins from looting by treasure hunters, presidents...

Preserving our Legacy: Understanding Transformation Processes for Rock Art Conservation (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jeremy Freeman. Victoria Munoz. Carolyn Boyd.

The Lower Pecos Canyonlands of southwest Texas retain hundreds of rock art murals exhibiting varying degrees of preservation. Since 2009 Shumla Archaeological Research and Education Center has been documenting the murals, some of which date back 4,000 years. As part of this project, we collect Legacy Photographs to assess historic deterioration of the art. Analysis of these photographs has revealed significant changes in the imagery over the past 50 years; however, the factors affecting its...

Prioritizing the Concretions from Queen Anne’s Revenge for Conservation: A Case Study in Managing a Large Collection (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Kimberly P Kenyon.

In the ongoing excavation of archaeological site 31CR314 (Blackbeard’s flagship Queen Anne’s Revenge), approximately 3,000 concretions have been raised as of Fall 2014.  With a plan for complete recovery, and considering that an estimated 60% of the site has been excavated so far, over 5,000 concretions could eventually be recovered.  With the substantial amount of conservation to be done and only 2 full-time conservators, a plan for how to proceed through the collection was needed.  Over the...

Protection of Cultural Heritage: The Case of Yaxcabá and Yaxunah, Yucatán (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Vania Carrillo Bosch. Aline Magnoni. Travis Stanton.

The objective of the paper is to present and compare the notions held by the contemporary residents of the town of Yaxcabá, the municipality’s head, and the village of Yaxunah in Central Yucatán, about the protection and conservation of the archaeological sites on their lands. Even though Yaxcabá and Yaxunah are less than 20 km apart, these two population centers display social, political, and economic differences and have been influenced by varying amounts of exposure to archaeological...

Public Engagement at the Conservation Research Laboratory (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Christopher Dostal.

This is an abstract from the "Shipwrecks and the Public: Getting People Engaged with their Maritime History" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. At any given point, there are multiple large-scale archaeological conservation projects underway at the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University from all over the United States or abroad. Because the artifacts being conserved are often hundreds or thousands of miles removed from the location...

Radiocarbon Age of Consolidants and Adhesives used in Archaeological Conservation (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Carley Crann.

When radiocarbon dating archaeological material, it is paramount to understand how the object was conserved and which conservation products were used in order to determine: 1) the best location on the artifact to sample; 2) how to remove the consolidant physically and/or chemically, and; 3) whether or not the consolidant was successfully removed. The archaeologist usually knows the approximate age of the artifact given the context in which it was found so when the radiocarbon age is not as...

Ralph H Cameron and the Grand Canyon (Part 1) (1978)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Douglas H. Strong.

For over thirty years, Ralph Henry Cameron- Arizona businessman, miner and politician - attempted to develop and control the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Cameron's interest in the canyon dated from the 1880s when prospectors explored the depths of the canyon, and stage coaches started bringing curious tourists to view the spectacular work of nature. Cameron helped to build the first trails into the canyon and opened its first flourishing mine. In time, however, his construction of a tourist...

Ralph H. Cameron and the Grand Canyon (Part II) (1978)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Douglas H. Strong.

Ralph Cameron's election in 1920 to the United States Senate from Ariwna came at an opportune time. Congress, the year before, had incorporated his mining claims into the newly created Grand Canyon National Park, and the United States Supreme Court had just ruled that his claims there were invalid. As matters stood, there seemed little likelihood that Cameron could realize his dream of converting strategically located mineral sites into a fortune. But Cameron's optimism never deserted him....
