In 1686, the French ship of exploration La Belle sank in Matagorda Bay off the coast of what is now Texas. The Musée du Quai Branly holds a snuff tray allegedly from Tiahuanaco. It was collected by the geologist Georges Courty during the archaeological excavations conducted on the site by the French Scientific Mission to South America in 1903. Human trophy skulls have a long history in Mesoamerica. Excavation of Structure 9M-136, an elite household in the center of the ancient Maya center of Xuenkal revealed a trophy skull in situ from funerary context, where it was found placed on the chest of an elite individual within a complex burial deposit. Rediscovering Airship Artifacts (2015)

USS Macon, the last large Navy airship, was lost along with the bi-planes it carried off the Coast of California in 1935. The wreck site was discovered in 1990 and surveyed in 1991, 1992, and 2006. Before the site was included within the boundaries of the Monterrey Bay National Marine Sanctuary a small diagnostic recovery effort was made and several artifacts were brought up, conserved, and then distributed to museums around the US.
