Citation DOCUMENT [ID: 433798] Anna Antoniou. Jason De León.

This often darkly colored apparel is intended to help people furtively move across the desert and avoid detection by Border Patrol. When recovered archaeologically, this clothing is often torn, faded, and stained with bodily fluids that reflect different forms of physical pain experienced en route. Here we employ the concept of "usewear" (i.e. modifications...

Exploring the Materiality of Prehistoric Cloth-types (2008)

Citation DOCUMENT [ID: 422101] Susanna Harris.

However, the materiality of cloth, including its structure and surfaces, and sensual properties (colour, smell, flexibility and texture) are integral to the understanding of these artefacts as part of past human engagement. To investigate this subject, I have conducted experiments to explore the materiality of...

From Rags to Riches: The Class, Status, and Power of Clothing Among Ancient Maya Women (2015)

Citation DOCUMENT [ID: 397366] Lisa DeLance.

Analysis of Maya female imagery has generally centered on the role of women as depicted on monumental architecture. While we understand these depictions to be tools of propaganda, they are often used to make assertions about the lived experience of ancient Maya women. In contrast to the analysis of highly politicized and highly public imagery depicted on monumental architecture, this paper examines depictions of feminine performance on a personalized medium: Maya painted vases. More...
