Archaeological Testing and Management of 11 Sites, Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter County, South Carolina and associated correspondence
Summary
Including a management summary, testing reports and preliminary memos, these documents present the results of Phase II archaeological testing of eleven sites on the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter County, South Carolina. The eleven sites include: 38SU56, 38SU60, 38SU106, 38SU153, 38SU157, 38SU163, 38SU167, 38SU169, 38SU204, 38SU205, and 38SU230. Of these sites, seven are prehistoric and four are historic. The sites are located in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina. All of the sites are located on land owned by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and the testing was conducted in order to assess each site’s eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Archaeological testing was carried out by New South Associates, Inc. at the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range. The fieldwork was conducted from December, 1999 to March, 2000 under the direction of Ashley A. Chapman. Of the eleven sites tested, five are recommended as eligible for inclusion on the National register. The remaining six are recommended as not eligible for inclusion on the National Register. These sites generally do not contain substantially intact subsurface deposits or structural features.
