Analysis of Historic Artifacts and Faunal Material From Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park
Author(s): Karolyn Jackman Jensen; Margaret Glass
Year: 1999
Summary
Cathy Johnson of Arizona State Parks asked Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) to analyze historic material recovered from salvage excavations at the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park (AZ X:6:90(ASM)), which was used from 1876 to 1909. The artifacts were unexpectedly encountered during the demolition of a deteriorating adobe wall. This wall will be replaced by a reproduction of the original 18-ft walls that enclosed the old prison yard. Most of the artifacts were recovered from a shallow pit near the south wall. Thirty-two additional artifacts were found near the east wall. Ms. Karolyn Jackman Jensen analyzed and interpreted the historic artifacts, and Dr. Margaret Glass analyzed and interpreted the faunal material.
