Modoc Rock Shelter, IL (11R5)-1984 East Pillar 1/4" Faunal data
Part of the Modoc Rock Shelter Site, IL (11R5) 1984 Excavation project
Creator(s): Mona Colburn; Bonnie Styles
Year: 1984
Summary
This data set contains the vertebrate and freshwater mussel data excavated in 1984 from the East Pillar and processed with 1/4" waterscreening. The East Pillar is located within the Main Shelter area of Modoc; it includes Units G, H, and J (no bones were identified from J).
Vertebrate remains were identified by Mona Colburn using the Illinois State Museum Osteological Comparative Collection, and checked by Dr. Bonnie Styles. Freshwater mussels were identified by Bonnie Styles and verified by Dr. Robert Warren. The 1984 excavations were funded by National Science Foundation collaborative grants to the Illinois State Museum and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with Drs. Bonnie Styles and Melvin Fowler serving as the Principal Investigators for these projects.
Recovery methods are specified in the Modoc Rock Shelter Site, IL (11R5) 1984 Excavation Project description. Radiocarbon dates for the East Pillar area of the Central Shelter are also provided in the same project description. Strata numbers in the East Pillar Area are not equivalent to those in the Main Trench area of the Central Shelter. The East Pillar Strata are recorded with "E" and "AE" following the strata number, e.g., Strata 7E and 10AE.
