EMAP Phelps - LA 37691 Unit 1, 1983
Summary
Unit 1 was chosen to excavate because it was a burned room. One of our main goals this summer was to get dates. Hopefully, the burning would allow us to get good archeomagnetic, dendro, and C14 material. This was the first room opened in LA 37691, also known as the Post Classic site. From the surface, Unit 1 appeared to be one large room measuring 5.5 m x 2.5 m and running east and west. We began excavating in the east side of the room using 5 cm levels to give good provenience control. Approximately in the middle of this large rook, a subsurface cross wall was found. This divided the room in to, at least, two rooms. We continued to working only in the east room. Because of large depressions along the east wall, there did appear to be some potting. Throughout the excavation of Unit 1 no other evidence of potting was found.
