POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT SITE 36LU311 FOR THE EIGHTH STREET BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT, PENNSYLVANIA

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Kathryn Puseman

Year: 2000

Summary

Eighty pollen samples were examined to provide a paleoenvironmental record at Site

36LU311 (Site XE2661, the Area of Potential Effects (APE)) for the Eighth Street Bridge

Replacement Project in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This site was examined

archaeologically during the fall of 2000, at which time several back hoe trenches were dug

through the floodplain on the north side of the Susquehanna River. Pollen samples were

examined from the back hoe trenches. In addition, four sediment samples from features were

floated to recover macrofloral remains and charcoal for radiocarbon dating. Macrofloral analysis

will provide information concerning plant resources utilized by the site occupants. Charred

botanic remains and charcoal were recovered from the macrofloral samples for AMS

radiocarbon dating. A total of four radiocarbon dates were obtained.

Stratigraphic pollen analysis provides evidence for local and regional vegetation

throughout the time periods represented in the samples. The specific research question that

may be addressed through this analysis is identifying the vegetation on the floodplain and how it

has varied through time.
