PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF PROJECTILE POINTS AND POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, STARCH, AND ORGANIC RESIDUE (FTIR) ANALYSIS OF PIPE FRAGMENTS FROM THE MCGLOIN BLUFF SITE (41SP11), TEXAS

Summary

Six chert projectile point fragments were submitted for protein residue analysis, along with two probable smoking pipe fragments for pollen, phytolith, starch, and organic residue analysis. As both pipe fragments belonged to the same pipe the fragment with the least naturally occurring asphaltum on the exterior was selected for organic residue analysis, and both fragments were used for pollen, phytolith, and starch analysis. The pipe fragment selected for organic residue analysis was tested using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine materials being smoked.
