IDENTIFICATION AND AMS RADIOCARBON DATING OF CHARCOAL AND POLLEN, STARCH, PHYTOLITH, AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSES AT THE GENEVIEVE LYKES DUNCAN SITE, 41BS2615, TEXAS

Summary

Charcoal samples from the Genevieve Lykes Duncan Site, 41BS2615, were submitted for identification and AMS radiocarbon dating. This site is a buried, open campsite located in Brewster County, Texas, and includes three locales. This area experienced multiple occupations including Paleoindian, Early Archaic, and Middle Archaic. Charcoal was recovered from features exposed in the vertical cut bank of an unnamed arroyo running generally northeast to southwest at this site. Identification of charcoal and AMS radiocarbon dates were obtained on two samples from the Mask Locality at the northeast portion of the site, on twelve charcoal samples from the Broadway Locality, and on one charcoal sample from the Terlingua Locality in the western portion of the site. Microcharcoal also was extracted from sediment in a charcoal sample submitted from the arroyo wall above Backhoe Trench 4 at the Broadway Locality and submitted for dating. In addition, sediment associated with a hearth feature (Feature 1) at the Broadway Locality was examined for pollen and starches, while two conjoined groundstone fragments were washed to recover phytoliths and starches. Hearth fill from Features 1 and 2 at the Broadway Locality also were examined for macrofloral remains. Pollen, phytolith, and macrofloral analyses were used to provide evidence for plant resources utilized by the Paleoindian occupants of the site.
