Semi-Annual Technical Report, 27 Archaeological Surveys at Forestry Activity Areas, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia

Summary

The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, completed Phase I archaeological survey in association with proposed forestry activities in 27 forestry blocks located in Training Areas 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 20, 26, and 28, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed forestry activities included one pine selection cut (Block S), four pine shelterwood cuts (Blocks H, T, 26A06PW, and 28A06PW), thirteen pine thinnings (Blocks I, AI, 07B06TH, 07C06TH, 07D06TH, 07F06TH, 08A06TH, 08B06TH, 08C06TH, 08D06TH, 08E06TH, 08G06TH, and 09D06TH), and nine prescribed burns (Burns 02-A, 04-A, 06-E, 06-F, 06-G, 13-A, 13-B, 13-C, and 20-A). The Project Area consists of approximately 266.4 hectares (658.2acres) of forestland.

The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the proposed forestry blocks and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Seven archaeological sites (44CE0294, 44CE0295, 44CE0524, 44CE0525, 44CE0526, 44CE0527, and 44CE0528) and two isolated artifact locations (IA-0702 and IA-0703) were identified during the survey. The artifact locations are not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

One previously recorded archaeological site (44CE0295) and one identified archaeological site (44CE0524) are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

One previously recorded archaeological site (44CE0294) and three identified archaeological sites (44CE0526, 44CE0527, and 44CE0528) are recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and will be marked and avoided during the proposed forestry activities. As Site 44CE0528 is a cemetery, that site has also been recorded as Virginia Department of Historic Resources architectural resource number 016-0349-0059.

One identified archaeological site (Site 44CE0525) is recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, but will not be avoided during the proposed prescribed burn as no extant surficial deposits at the site are likely to be damaged by fire and the burn will allow for better site visibility during future surveys.
