Part of the Phase I Investigation, US Navy North Severn Waste Treatment Upgrade,US Navy North Severn Complex (2013.048) project

Summary
An archaeological identification survey (Phase I) was performed within the proposed area of the upgrades to the North Severn Waste Water Treatment Plant located at the Naval Support Activity Annapolis, Maryland. The project area consists of approximately 5.3 acres in the North Severn area along the south bank of Carr Creek, within Anne Arundel County, Maryland. This project area is located in the Severn River drainage portion of Council for Maryland Archeology Research Unit 7.
The subsurface survey consisted of 25 shovel test pits (STPs) excavated at 15-meter intervals in portions of the project area with potential for undisturbed archaeological resources. No prehistoric artifacts were found in the project area. Low densities of historic and modern artifacts were found in locations affected by modern construction.
The archaeological investigations detailed in this report resulted did not identify any intact deposits related to either prehistoric or historic occupation, demonstrating that that no significant archaeological resources are present within the project area. No further archaeological work is recommended here. Nevertheless, because there is a small possibility for archaeological resources, specifically prehistoric and historic middens, along the steep slope defining the northeast boundary of the project area, future work there should apply procedures for unanticipated discoveries.
