Archaeological Testing at a Portion of La Ciudad de Los Hornos: The Superstition Freeway and Priest Drive Locale (AZ U:9:48 ASM)
Author(s): Mark L. Chenault; Kirk Anderson; James E. Ayres
Year: 1991
Summary
SWCA, Inc. Environmental Consultants conducted test excavations at a portion of La Ciudad de los Hornos located south of the Superstition Freeway in Tempe, Maricopa County, Arizona. The testing was performed for the Arizona Department of Transportation (Contract Number 90-29), with fieldwork taking place from 21 January 1991 to 18 February 1991. Sixty-eight backhoe trenches (most being 20 m in length) were placed in a systematic pattern throughout the project area. Testing was conducted at a level of from 1 to 3 percent. The project area consisted of a 20.62 acre parcel. A total of 145 archaeological features was discovered and documented during the testing project. Architectural and material culture evidence indicate that the archaeological remains are Hohokam and date from the late Pioneer period through the Classic period. Portions of the historic Wormser Canal were also encountered during testing. It is recommended that a comprehensive data recovery phase be implemented to mitigate possible damage to the prehistoric and historic remains.
