Investigations of Archaeological Sites Along the 500 kV Tonto National Forest Boundary to Kyrene Transmission Line Route, Coronado Station Project, Pinal and Maricopa Counties, Arizona

Author(s): John M. Antieau

Year: 1977

Summary

This report presents the results of an archaeological survey and subsequent test investigation of sites along the 68 km (42 mi) right-of-way for a proposed 500 KV transmission line from a point on the boundary of the Tonto National Forest northeast of Florence Junction to the existing Kyrene substation south of Tempe, Arizona. The power line will consist of a series of four-legged transmission towers placed at approximately 1700 foot intervals. The right-of-way varies between 30 m (100 ft) and 1000 m (330 ft). Potential negative impacts which could occur to archaeological deposits would result from the construction of the towers and of an access road. Vegetation clearance in the right-of-way would have a minimal impact.

The archaeological investigation was conducted by the Office of Cultural Resource Management, Department of Anthropology, Arizona State University, under a contract with the Salt River Project. The project was initiated following an initial request in January, 1977, by the SRP for an archaeological clearance. The survey was conducted between February 7 and 25, 1977, resulting in the identification of 16 site areas (two of which had been previously recorded) and numerous other isolated remains. A preliminary report summarizing the results of the survey and recommending additional research on eight sites was submitted to the Salt River Project in March, 1977. The proposed work was designed to minimize the adverse impact of tower construction and road grading, and the field work was completed by May 13, 1977. Impact to one site was also minimized by relocating the position of Tower #75, following a field visit on March 1, 1977, by members of the Salt River Project and Office of Cultural Resource Management, ASU.

The results of both the survey and the additional investigations are contained in this report.
