The Mead to Phoenix 500kV Transmission Line Project, The Tower 29 Site: Re-Evaluation of Site 26CK3216, Clark County, Nevada
Author(s): David E. Purcell
Year: 1996
Summary
Salt River Project has constructed a 500kV transmission line from Boulder City, Nevada, to near Phoenix, Arizona; Site 26CK3216 was first recorded by the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) during archaeological survey of the Mead to Phoenix right-of-way (Keller 1986). The site was originally recommended for data recovery but was determined ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and construction proceeded without additional investigation. Biologists monitoring the Mead to Phoenix Project construction reported intact roasting features and petroglyph panels to SWCA Archaeologist Gregory R. Seymour, who was in the area conducting a survey of cable-pulling areas; Seymour examined the features and contacted Lake Mead Park Archaeologist Leslie Peterson regarding the status of the site. SWCA re-evaluated the site and recorded 13 intact features that were identified as probable roasting pits, burned-rock middens, and rock piles, suggesting that the site is eligible. SWCA completed re-evaluation of the site by recording an additional 125 features and mapping the site using a Total Station laser theodolite. SWCA also rerecorded Site 26CK3217, recorded a previously undocumented portion of Site 26CK5254, and recorded Site 26CK4784. The SWCA survey required 6 person-field days.
